Finding Your Forever Items—Clothes that become lifelong friends
There are some friends who just get you. You know the ones—they’ve known you forever. You
can go weeks or months without seeing each other, but when you reunite you pick up again
right where you left off. They’re those special relationships that fit you just right and always feel
like home.
For me, finding a forever piece of clothing feels the same way. Forever items are the ones that
stay in your wardrobe for years. You may put it away for a month or a season, but you come
back to it again and again. And when you do, it always feels fresh, yet comforting and familiar.
So how do you find a forever item? Well, just like with people, you don’t always know which
items you’ll cherish forever. But if you’re looking for pieces you’ll love for years here are a few
tips for what to look out for.
FIT
Just like you don’t have to force conversation with a good friend, you shouldn’t have to force
clothing to fit your body. A forever item should fit you comfortably.
If you buy an item that’s too snug or that highlights a part of your body that you’d rather not show off, you’re likely to outgrow it.
Look for items that have a flattering cut, especially one that will work with your body if you put
on or lose a few pounds. Often when we shop, we tend to get self-critical and unforgiving of our
shape. But the best items are the ones that are as sleekly cut as they are forgiving. Life will
bring changes and ups and downs, and your forever item should be flexible enough to grow with
you.
The Liquid Leather Jacket is a perfect example. It’s cut to flatter your waist, and it fits close to the body.
But it’s not so tight that you have to squeeze yourself into it.
It’s flexible and ready to grow with you through the years.
FABRIC
A forever item can look like anything, but fabrics that feel good on your skin are a must! Like a
good friend, forever items have to be comfortable. If it bristles or itches, that’s a no! If it feels as
soft as your favorite PJ set, that’s a yes! If you’re on the fence about your comfort level ask
yourself if you’d feel comfortable boarding an 8-hour flight in it. Like a dear friend, your forever
item should make you feel comfortable, even in close quarters.
It’s also important to look for items that are durable and easy to care for.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the luxurious feeling of silk.
But a high-maintenance fabric can wear and tear easily.
What you want is something you can wear again and again, so it needs to be strong and low-maintenance, like the Clara Sunwoo signature knit used in this mesh-edge skirt.
It’s a quick-drying, easy care fabric that’s super soft, wrinkle-resistant and so easy to care for. Like
that forever friend, it will always have your back.
VERSATILITY
Forever items can be fun and splashy. But they should also be versatile! That means you can
pair them with different accessories and dress them up or down for different occasions. Just like
that friend who you can laugh with on the sofa or dance the night away with on the town, your
forever items should be up for adventures big and small.
One of my favorite forever items is the Clara Sunwoo Signature Jumpsuit.
I can dress it up with heels and jewelry for a special evening out, or I can slip on some sandals, throw my hair in a
ponytail and wear it to a barbecue. Either way, I know I’ll feel totally comfortable and at home in
it, because the fabric and fit always feel just right.
